How I met Jesus and secured
my future with Him
By Josephine (Macquarie Uni)
Last year I made a new friend and His name was Jesus. He changed my attitude towards life and my beliefs about God. He made me feel like a newly born person inside and helped me realise that life is not all about my career and the success I would want to achieve. Jesus opened up my eyes and showed me the true meaning of life and my real purpose in this world.
Before I met Jesus, I was a confused person who was sceptical about spiritual matters, especially with the existence of God. I was brought up in a family who believe in God. The question of 'Would I end up with God when I die?' crossed through my mind many times. Fearing that I may not, I tried to be good and kind to others believing that it would earn me the right to be with God when I die.
Little did I know that in University, I would have the opportunity to overcome these doubts. During my first year I met a girl who invited me to join Student Life which is a Christian organisation on campus. Since I was scared of getting involved with any religious organisations different to mine I refused to join in. However, I still took some time to meet up with this girl and have lunch. We became really good friends. During my second year at Uni, there came a time when circumstances crushed me to the point that my faith faltered. I stopped talking to God as I felt like He wasn't around when I needed Him the most. I shared this with the girl and she advised me to read a booklet called Knowing God Personally, which is a summary of the Bible. I studied the booklet with her to help restore my faith in God and to gain strength to get through those difficult times.
It took a while before I could absorb the truth about God. After reflecting on my own, I realised that God really does exist but I couldn't feel it because I didn't have a relationship with Him. I learnt that as God's creation our purpose in life is to have a relationship with our Creator. But this is impossible because God is perfect and just and we have a continually rebellious attitude towards Him. However, because God loves me and everyone so much He sent Jesus to die on the cross as a payment for our rebellious attitude. By accepting what Jesus had done and asking for forgiveness for my continual bad attitude, I was assured of spending forever with God. This had nothing to do with my kindness to others but all of what Jesus had done.
My life changed on the day I realised this. I began to have an actual relationship with God, where I would talk to Him regularly and listen to Him through His word (the Bible). Every time I go through difficult times, I don't worry that much anymore, I would just talk to God as I know He's always beside me watching and looking after me. The thought of spending forever with Him became clear to me and I was assured that I would be with Him when I die because of Jesus' death on the cross and rising from the dead.
Since the day I accepted Jesus, I could feel the changes happening in my life. I am neither suspicious about the existence of God now nor doubtful about the meaning of my life. My relationship with God made me realise that I have a secure future with Him.
