[title card] What will I gain for my life right now, if I believe in Jesus?

I have a friend of mine who's a philosopher, who often talks about an interesting acronym: VIM. Vision. Intention. Means. And he argues that in all of life, you really need the three of those. Vision, intention, means. And I think my relationship with Jesus gives me all three of those.

Vision, I'm married. I really should love my wife. That's a powerful vision. But, I also need intention and means, in virtually every aspect of my life. My relationship with God really gives me all three of those.

A vision to be kind, loving, compassionate. An intention to do that. But, most importantly, what my relationship with Jesus gives me is the means to do that.

I can set out to love my wife as a powerful vision, but my selfishness, my hurriedness, keeps me from doing that. The powerful means that God gives me is the power of the Holy Spirit. See, the same power that created the universe, the same power that resurrected Christ from the dead, that same power, when you accept Christ, that power comes inside of you.

So there are times when, quite frankly, I don't want to love my wife, because of my selfishness. That's when the power of God, as a means, helps me to do that.

There are times as a community member, that I don't want to love people in my community that I don't like, that I don't care about. But that's when the power of God, as a means, causes me to even like, and love, my enemy.

See, we can have a vision for a good community. We can have a vision for a good campus. We can have a vision of the type of person we want to be. And many of us have that. We can even intend to do those things, but even we lack the means to do that.

My relationship with God gives me a powerful vision of the kind of person to be, an intention to do it, but most importantly, being a Christian means I'm not left to myself. It means the power of God comes inside me and gives me the means to carry out the vision I have for my life and the vision that God has for my life as well.
