Why I Value God

One night my family and I walked through our empty house.  The next day a team of demolishers was coming to tear down the old house to build a new one.  In the basement, we walked past a small iron door built into the wall. We had never attempted to open it. It seemed sealed shut.

My daughter Anja cried, “Let’s open the door!“
I thought, no, there was nothing in there. It would take a lot of work to open.  It would probably just be filled with bugs and dust.  Besides, there was no key and the house was ancient—built in 1837.

But Anja was so intrigued by what might possibly be behind the door.  She continued to urge me to open it.  So the morning the demolishers were scheduled to come with their machinery, I decided to try to open the iron door.  I grabbed a crowbar and pried it open.  Inside, we found a silver coin collection. Some of the coins were eighty or more years old!  It was not a fortune, but it was a treasure.  Without the urging of my daughter Anja, I would not have pried open the iron door.  The demolishers would have torn the house down and we would never have experienced the treasure behind the door.

For me, approaching God was like approaching that iron door in my basement—always there, but I lacked any interest in opening it.  I thought that God was just an invention of man.  I thought religion was ancient tradition, dusty and useless.  My friends urged me to think about God, to give him a try.
Their urgings led me to start reading the Bible and asking questions. I opened the door to God and found in him an everlasting treasure.

"Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks, the door will be opened.“  Matthew 7:7-8
