Why are we motivated to be kind?

What compels us to be kind? To care for others, sometimes at the expense of our time or finances?

And consider the heroic efforts to save a person from a fire or from drowning, possibly at risk to their own lives.

Darwin would say we are selfish, compelled to act according to "survival of the fittest." And yet, we don't.

There is in human nature, a heart of compassion that runs upstream, against evolutionary processes.
